Project Description
The Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies (AIE) and U.S. Embassy Madrid are pleased to announce a collaboration with the Matadero Contemporary Arts Center in Madrid, Spain. The collaboration revolved around a conversation about inspiration between Spanish high school students, internationally acclaimed American artist Theaster Gates, The Studio Museum of Harlem director and chief curator Thelma Golden, and AIE deputy director and chief curator Virginia Shore. Gates, Golden, and Shore spoke about their careers with students from Madrid public high schools on February 18, 2015 at the Matadero Madrid. These events were part of Embassy Madrid’s public outreach associated with the AIE exhibition at the official residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Spain, James Costos, featuring significant works by American artists Gates, Ligon, Josef Albers, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha and Julie Mehretu,. Also featured are Spanish artists such as Eduardo Chillida, Antonio Saura, Antoni Tàpies, Esteban Vincente, Cristina Iglesias and Javier Romero. This ambitious exhibition was curated by Shore and Michael Smith as a tribute to cultural diversity. “We are pleased to bring a diverse group of incredibly successful contemporary American creators to inspire Spain’s next generation of artists,” said Ambassador Costos. “To make it in today’s art market, creators must also be entrepreneurs. This event not only exposes Spanish youth to a few of the amazing artists represented in our Art in Embassies exhibition, it will offer them a vision of how to turn creative dreams into reality.” Theaster Gates’s work combines strategies of social practice, urban planning, object making and performance to respond creatively to the challenges of space. Golden has re-dedicated the Studio Museum of Harlem to art from the African Diaspora. Shore has been instrumental in creating new partnerships and opportunities for the AIE program Art in Embassies, a premier public-private partnership within the U.S. Department of State, furthers cultural diplomacy efforts through the power of the visual arts and expansive international cross-cultural exchange. Matadero Madrid is a contemporary art center whose mission is to promote creation in all its forms and expressions. With special attention to cross-sector initiatives, Matadero Madrid focuses on training, production and dissemination.
