Joseph Meeker

After serving in the Union Navy, Joseph Meeker settled in St. Louis and became one of the leading painters of the Southern landscape. He studied at the National Academy of Design under Asher B. Durand, but his style was most influenced by his experience in the Mississippi Delta during the Civil War. Famous for his evocative paintings of swamps and bayous, Meeker imbued his landscapes with a romantic and mysterious air. He was a leading figure in St. Louis’ burgeoning art scene and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Boston Art Club. His work can now be found in the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum.
