Max Weber

Max Weber helped introduce modern art to the United States in the early twentieth century through his paintings that synthesized such styles as cubism and expressionism. In 1905, Weber traveled to Paris, where he enrolled at traditional ateliers such as the Académie Julian. However, he soon gravitated toward avant-garde circles, associating with such painters as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Upon return to the United States, Weber translated European modernism into a vehicle for expressing the dynamism of the new American urban landscape.
