Roland Petersen’s paintings integrate still life, figures, and landscape into complex compositions that are beautiful and enigmatic, but still retain a strong sense of place, in this case the fields and farms of California’s Central Valley. Most recognizable for his Picnic series, Petersen’s career has spanned seven decades as a painter and as a professor at the University of California, Davis.
