Minerva J. Chapman

Minerva Chapman was born in Sand Bank, in upstate New York, but began her artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago where her family had moved. In 1886 at the age of 28, she traveled to Europe where she remained in Paris for the next thirty years. As a testament to her Parisian achievements, she became one of the first American women to gain membership to the Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts in 1906. Unfortunately, due to her lack of recognition in the United States coupled with her practice of not signing her paintings, many of her works have been lost and are still unaccounted for.
