Artist, curator, and advocate Jesse Krimes connects his experiences of incarceration and reentry into society to critically examine the American criminal justice system and the complex dynamics of authority. His work, which focuses on criminal and racial justice, explores how contemporary media molds and reinforces societal mechanisms of power and control. After graduating from Millersville University, Pennsylvania, Krimes was indicted on drug charges and served six years in prison. While serving his sentence, he created and smuggled out numerous artworks, initiated prison art programs, and co-established multiracial artist collectives. Since his release, Krimes continues to advocate for criminal justice reform.
