Robert LaHotan was a painter known for his landscapes and still lifes rendered in bold color and broad brushstrokes. He was influenced by French post-impressionist artists such as Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, who painted intimate, sun-filled scenes of everyday life. Born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, LaHotan grew up in western Massachusetts before moving to New York City to study painting. LaHotan divided his time between New York City, where he taught painting and art history at the Dalton School, and Cranberry Island, Maine, whose coastal landscape became a lasting source for his work.
