Friedel Dzubas

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Friedel Dzubas developed a distinctive abstract language in which loosely brushed fields of color are juxtaposed, overlapped, and set against areas of open canvas. Born in Berlin, Dzubas studied under Paul Klee at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf before fleeing Nazi Germany for the United States in 1939. After settling in New York, he became associated with the abstract expressionist movement, developing a close friendship with critic Clement Greenberg and later sharing a studio with Helen Frankenthaler. He was included in Greenberg’s landmark exhibition Post-Painterly Abstraction, organized for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Dzubas received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1966 and 1968 and an award from the National Council on the Arts in 1968.
