Dorothy Hood’s paintings evoke expansive landscapes while also alluding to interior, psychological spaces. A native Texan raised in Houston, Hood studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York before traveling to Mexico in 1941, where she spent nearly two decades immersed in Mexico City’s community of avant-garde artists and intellectuals before returning to Houston. After returning, Hood was the focus of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and became one of the city’s most celebrated abstract painters.
