Sess Essoh

Literature, philosophy, and language play a major role in Sess Essoh’s artistic practice. Growing up, Essoh was inspired by his father’s daily journaling routine and grew fascinated by the celebrations and traditional rites of his community in Cote d’Ivoire. Later impacted by the urban world in Abidjan, he used poetry and writing to assess the broader sociopolitical environment, one that he sees as losing its bearings or values. Essoh gravitated toward collages and graphemes, placing golden leaves or colored crepons on canvas or ephemera such as cardboard and archival pages.
