Herbert Evender French was a commercial photographer and entrepreneur based in Washington, D.C. As a member of the White House News Photographers Association, he covered the administrations from President Taft through President Hoover. He later bought the National Photo Company, which documented daily life and events in Washington, D.C., including presidential inaugurations, sports, and local landmarks. French documented a wide range of events and was particularly interested in baseball, including Washington, D.C.’s team, the Washington Senators (now the Washington Nationals). The Library of Congress has a collection of more than 80,000 of the company’s photographic files.
