James Ayers is an Arizona-based contemporary painter working in figurative and landscape traditions. Although his earlier work depicted Indigenous communities and everyday life, Ayers now focuses primarily on landscapes, cityscapes, and portraiture. Experimental yet rooted in formal art techniques, his work emphasizes surface, gesture, and the physicality of paint. “My goal with every painting is to tap into this bodily phenomenon and provide a way for viewers to experience a moment instead of simply observing it…It’s the act of creating a painting that excites me—scraping, pushing, and pulling the paint on the canvas. I really like seeing people get lost in those textures, as if they’re daydreaming,” Ayers says.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Ayers has worked as a fine artist since the mid-1990s. He continues to travel the world, drawing inspiration from global landscapes and culture.
