Joan Baez

In her career as an international performer and activist, Joan Baez has been on the front lines of many nonviolent social justice and human rights movements of the past century. She walked arm-in-arm with Martin Luther King Jr. during civil rights marches in Mississippi and got thrown in jail for protesting the Vietnam War. Since retiring from active performing, Baez has been able to focus her talents in the visual arts on painting and drawing, creating art with a social conscience. Mischief Makers, a series of portraits of risk-taking visionaries who have fought for social change through nonviolent action, launched her painting career.
