Born and raised in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Kathryn Mapes Turner developed an early appreciation for the dramatic light and natural composition of the surrounding landscape. After studying art in her teenage years, she attended the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where she studied studio art, and later continued her studies at the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C. Although Turner now travels the world to paint, Grand Teton National Park remains a central source of inspiration for her work. Describing her artistic practice, Turner said: “I strive to create paintings that record my own experience of the subject’s essential spirit and energy, not an imitation of a fixed surface reality. This process requires my presence, enthusiasm, open-minded appreciation, playfulness, courage and honesty. In this way, creating art is transformative, universal, and timeless.”
