Lori Elliott-Bartle

Painter and printmaker Lori Elliott-Bartle finds inspiration in the big skies and open landscapes of the prairie in her native Nebraska. After years of working as a professional journalist and in higher education, Elliott-Bartle rediscovered her passion for artmaking while enrolled in a watercolor class.

Elliott-Bartle describes her painting process as highly physical, incorporating rollers, wide blades, and brushes to apply paint before blotting, scraping, and carving into the surface to build texture and reveal underlying layers of color. “Mixing oil paint and softened beeswax allows me to create paintings that hold depth, complexity and texture; some of the same qualities about the prairie that I appreciate,” she says. “In my mind, planning, planting and maintaining the gardens are intertwined with making paintings, as they all celebrate and deepen my connection with nature.”
