Mary Hatch

I’m in love with color and the figure continues to fascinate me.
My work begins with little fragments of life unintentionally stored away. Tiny bits of memory – much too insignificant to notice – mysteriously come together forming narratives, familiar, as if they have always existed. The big things have a way of staying separate and need no further explanation, the small things we take for granted, finally emerge intuitively, and paste themselves together.
“The Messenger” began years ago in my first Art History class while studying the Renaissance & finally emerged after a trip to Italy. Traveling by train between Florence and Rome, hundreds of perfect little Renaissance paintings passed by my window – astonishingly real – for in my mind the artist’s brush was their only creator. An undeniable reminder that past & present are always with us.

My undergraduate training began at Skidmore College in New York State as a Fine Arts Major. After moving back to Michigan I obtained a BA in Art Education from Western Michigan University as well as an MA in painting with hours toward an MFA. After teaching for a few years I returned to my studio in Kalamazoo where I continue to work. My work is included in over 300 Public & Private Collections in the US & Canada with an exhibition record of more than 30 one person shows in as many years.
