Matt Mitchell

Growing up in west Texas and southern New Mexico, my family moved around a lot. As a child I enjoyed the desert’s subtle beauty and found sanctuary in making art. I was especially fond of birds, being amazed by each bird’s personality, their brilliant colors, and abstract markings.

Monotype is a process of applying layer upon layer of ink using an etching press. The piece is sent through the press up to fifteen times, creating illumination and texture.

Sometimes I approach my bird painting as portrait. Other times my own story is imposed on the bird. My intention is that the viewer will encounter the uniqueness of each bird.
