Photojournalist Nicole Bengiveno’s work has been described as a blend of “sophisticated visual composition with an immediate connection to everyday people.” Covering news stories large and small, she relied on her ability to cultivate relationships with her subjects. “You have to make a commitment to be there, so they forget that you are there—so you disappear,” she said. “I feel it’s an honor when someone trusts you enough to let you into their lives.” Even when not covering a story, Bengiveno brought a photographer’s eye to the everyday: “I love the act of seeing,” she said. “Whenever I am outside walking, I find myself taking pictures—without a camera. I do that all the time.” Handball (Tompkins Square Park, New York City) shows the vibrancy and ceaseless energy of New York City as a man plays handball despite near-freezing temperatures.
After studying art and photography at San José State University, California, Bengiveno became a staff photographer for the San Francisco Examiner and the New York Daily News. From 1998 to 2016, she worked as a photographer for the New York Times and contributed to Lens, the newspaper’s photojournalism blog. Her work has appeared in Fortune, U.S. News & World Report, and Time.
