Phil Brown

Phil Brown is a woodturner who currently lives and works in Bethesda, Maryland. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Highlight Gallery, Mendocino, California (1998); Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany, 1996; and the Spurill Art Center, Atlanta, Georgia, 1996. His work is in the collections of The Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery, Washington, D.C., and the Wood Turning Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The artist notes that, “building on a life-long experience with wood, I began turning twenty-three years ago with the aid of a book. Workshops with leading wood turners and several conferences of the American Woodturners Association reinforced techniques and skills. Acceptance in over sixty juried and invitational shows, three solo shows, and numerous private sales have contributed to my continuing growth. While not formally trained in art and design, searching for form has always been paramount. Inspiration and ideas have come from glass and clay artists, selected oriental forms, well known sculptors and leading wood turners.”
