Stanton MacDonald-Wright

Stanton Macdonald-Wright was a leading figure in the development of synchromism, an abstract movement that treated color as the structural and expressive foundation of painting. After moving to Paris in 1909, he met fellow American artist Morgan Russell, with whom he developed the movement’s emphasis on color harmonies analogous to those of music. The outbreak of World War I prompted Macdonald-Wright to return to the United States in 1915, where his interests expanded beyond painting to include aviation, technology, theater, and Asian art and philosophy.
