Steve Schapiro

Photojournalist, activist, and documentarian Steve Schapiro captured pivotal moments in American history, ranging from the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom to events from the Black Lives Matter movement. Schapiro’s lifelong interest in social documentary and his consistently empathetic portrayal of his subjects developed his humanistic approach to photography. “[The Civil Rights movement during the 1960s] was an incredible time to be a photojournalist, because there was more of an emotional flow—an ability to do more emotional pictures that captured the spirit of a person,” Schapiro said.
