A celebrated nineteenth-century landscape and marine painter, Robert Swain Gifford was one of the first artists to travel to Alaska. He went as a commissioned landscape painter in 1889 for the Harriman Expedition, which traveled up the coast of Alaska as far as Plover Bay in Siberia.
